Quirin Jedlička

Our association does not focus only on open-air facilities for children, or hospital interiors and toys for children. We also try to support the physically or mentally handicapped.

It is our great pleasure to be able to introduce to you a very interesting man named Quirin Jedlička.

Despite his handicap (caused by cerebral palsy), his loving family background combined with his dedication to survive allow him to create very beautiful works of art. I have known Mr. Quirin Jedlička personally for a few years. We meet three times a year, but the time does not affect our relationship. He has simple answers to questions that other people would answer in many sentences.

Quirin, why do you paint?
"It sure beats sitting at a window and looking down at healthy people and thinking how miserable my life is."

Doesn’t his ironic common sense speak to you?
I have to say that his paintings do speak to me, they find their owners. And his books and poems say beautiful words and simple truths.

Let me introduce myself and tell you about some of the facts of my life. My name is Quirin Jedlička. I was born in Brno on January 31, 1953. As a child I suffered from cerebral palsy with all of its negative consequences which I still live with to this date. This experience has taught me modesty and humbleness, but it does not make me to start giving up things. In 1977 I graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Brno University of Technology. I started to work as a process engineer in the MEZ Brno company. However, due to my health condition I was given the disability status.

The beginnings of my art work date back to the 1980’s, and it became the meaning of my life. My art and literature expression (I published seven poem anthologies and I am listed in Czech poetry anthologies) I demonstrate my view of the world through paintings and poems. My paintings have modest atmosphere, they are mid-sized and large formats, on paper, cardboard and canvas; they are abstract, moody and sensational, with a hint of meditation. I organized ten individual exhibitions, I attended sixteen international symposia for painters and open-air events and two seminars for artists. The contact with my foreign colleagues was always very inspirational and I used this experience for my future works for a long time ahead.

I rarely do sketches or make notes in advance. I am very happy to be able to stand in front of a white canvas or paper. At that moment I have no idea where my inspiration will lead me.
